5 Myths About Outdoor Kitchens That Can Be Debunked

Amanda Delatorre • Mar 09, 2023

You may enjoy entertaining your guests outside during the spring, summer, and fall. If you want to install an outdoor kitchen, some myths may keep you from doing so. We’re here to help you find the truth. Many misconceptions surround kitchens, so we’ll ensure you know what’s real and what’s false. Check out five myths about outdoor kitchens that can be debunked.

You Can Put Your Kitchen in Direct Sunlight

This is a serious mistake and one you should avoid. Many homeowners will put their kitchen in direct sunlight because they enjoy “basking” in the rays with their friends. If you put your outdoor kitchen in direct sunlight, things can overheat quickly. Stainless steel, in particular, can get uncomfortably hot and difficult to use. Who wants to roast in the sun while entertaining guests? You can add a pergola to shade the kitchen and your guests.

It’s Okay To Skimp on the Grill

The last thing you want to do for your outdoor kitchen is skimp on the grill’s cost and size. Homeowners with outdoor kitchens use them because they don’t want to smoke up their homes. Grilling delicious vegetables, fish, and meat is healthy and nutritious, but you need to budget for a large, high-quality grill to take advantage of these meals. Cheaper isn’t always better, and you don’t want to shop for a new grill in a few years when you could have bought a durable, long-lasting one the first time.

You Don’t Need Outdoor Appliances

The major theme here isn’t just spending more money but spending more where it counts. Your appliances certainly count. You can cut corners if you want to, but installing indoor appliances outdoors is a recipe for failure. The wiring in the fridge will likely frazzle when a storm rolls through. To prevent this problem, make sure your appliances are built for the outdoors. This is a widespread outdoor kitchen myth that we can debunk.

You Can Build an Outdoor Kitchen With Wood

Don’t do this. Once you put a grill in the mix, you shouldn’t have any combustible materials around it. Your island and appliances should be brick, metal, or stone. If you must have the wood on your island, put an insulated jacket around it. That way, you won’t have to deal with any accidental fires.

Only The Rich Can Enjoy an Outdoor Kitchen

This isn’t true. Many budgets can accommodate an outdoor kitchen. Whatever you choose to spend is entirely up to you! For instance, you can spend $2,000 or $10,000 on a nice grill. You can choose a large marble floor or a lower-priced slate one. You can even budget for hot and cold faucets versus cold water only. Regardless, you don’t need to spend exorbitant amounts for an outdoor kitchen.
